White Sun
Across Asia • 1h 28m
Directed by Deepak Rauniyar • Drama • With Dayahang Rai, Asha Magrati, Rabindra Singh Baniya • 2016 • 89 minutes
Gorgeously lensed, WHITE SUN sensitively explores the damage done to the fabric of Nepalese society by the decade-long civil war between the Maoists and Nepal’s monarchical government. On the occasion of his father's funeral, Chandra returns to the village he left years earlier to join the Maoists, and finds himself revisiting frayed family relations and unspoken divisions among neighbors.
Past traumas return and cause tensions to boil over. Finding the political within the everyday, WHITE SUN uses one village's complex tribulations to speak to an entire national history.
"Rauniyar turns opposition into a structuring principle, creating a satisfyingly holistic work." —The New York Times
"Nepali helmer Deepak Rauniyar's outstanding second feature is a powerful drama about people and a nation at the crossroads." —Variety
