Directed by Graça Castanheira • Documentary • With Suad Amiry • 2013 • 30 minutes
Ten personalities from diverse social and geographical backgrounds reflect on the world and its future. A portrait in multiple voices of contemporary reality, revealing the deep connections that exist between our mental models and the consequences thereof in our present day—for the individual, for life, and for the planet. A series of lessons about our time and the way we live in it.
Episode 4 stars Suad Amiry, the Syrian author and director of the Riwaq Centre for Architectural Conservation.
Born in 1951 in Damascus, Syria and educated in Architecture at the universities of Beirut and Michigan. Between 1991 and 1993 she was a member of the Palestinian peace delegation in Washington. She is the director of the Centre for the Conservation of Palestinian Architectural Heritage and the author of several books. Suad Amiry became a writer by accident, but by nature she is a true story teller. She tells us about the human side of the occupation, the daily life of Palestinians that live under the scrutiny and control of the state of Israel. To be able to write, all that is needed is to have a story to tell, and Amiry tells us the story of millions of people that one day found their lives usurped, while she reflects on the conflict existing in the region—a conflict that is essentially about territorial control. A conflict that irremediably divides two peoples forced to become neighbors by our recent collective history.
